Description

This is much better, and it rendered faster too because of some changes I made to the shader. It still took hours to render but I got around that by leaving it rendering when I went to bed last night. I made the movement of the camera slower so you get more chance to see and understand the distortion of the light around the black hole. For those new to looking at black holes I'll explain some of the things to look for. First, that disk of material is actually fairly flat, like Saturn's rings. It appears above and below the black hole because the intensely powerful gravity of the black hole bends light around it, making the top and bottom surfaces of the ring behind the black hole clearly visible. As the black hole passes over background stars you can see the light from them being twisted in various ways by the intensity of the gravitational field, so as they are behind it you can see them more than once, distorted and curling around the black hole. Yes, black holes look weird; very weird. Backdrop stars are a free star map from NASA's deep star maps collection on the web site of their Scientific Visualisation Studio. Rendered in Blender version 2.92 on my 12-core Mac Pro.

Wicked cool version of the light bending effects, good sir! Still getting my mind to wrap around gravity so strong it actually bends light...

I do know a few folks I'd love to introduce - closely - to a black hole.... 😉

Actually even the Earth's gravity bends light, though this is so slight we don't notice it. In extreme cases is it enough to see very easily, as in the case of black holes and galaxy clusters. If you do an image search for "gravitational lensing" on your favourite search engine some of the images will be well worth seeing.

And I have my own list of people I'd like to introduce to the black hole and its health benefits. Well my health would benefit...
