In the upper midwest (Chicago is right at the beginning of that), May is the 1st month of spring, since it's wintry most of the time before that. You captured that new, welcome spirit here. The goddess is rendered in very soft tones, with a pinkish glow: She is perfect for newly-burst spring. And the yellows and bright greens behind her amplify the sun-drenched newness of May. The trees seem painted on in big flowing strokes, and the whole image feels like a teeming musical celebration. (The idea of April flowers bringing May flowers is alive here---the expression is very old, and may even trace back to the 1300s, in Canterbury Tales (("april with his showers sweet..." bringing flowers in its wake...)) A painterly, illumined celebration of the goddess of May (Maia, I presume), softened and caressed by soft hues and a tender sense of joyous rebirth.
