I once read a history of the WWII in Burma, "Beyond the Chindwin" by one Bernard Fergusson. He writes of an episode when British troops became wary upon discovering elephant tracks. The Japanese frequently used elephants for transportation and these tracks therefore might indicate a nearby Japanese patrol. An immobilizing session of reconnaissance followed, and it was discovered that the tracks were made by "one lonely elephant." Ever afterward in their calculations, the unit added an hour for a lonely elephant. Great render and thanks for reminding me of an intriguing, even a thrilling, read.
