The European soccer championships are taking place and everything revolves just around the ball. Lots of People are fixated in front of the TV and can hardly be lured away. The weather can as nice as it can and the "other offers" as tempting as ever possible - people are glued on the couch and watch every match with beer and potato chips. It seems to be an impossibility for those who can't get anything out of the whole soccer hype to win their dear Friends who are soccer fans for something else at this time. I honestly don't know what is so exciting about soccer being able to take such a dominant position in society, but obviously we are still in the time of society where "panem et circenses" unite the common people and all conflicts, corruption and human rights violations are generously overlooked. These can then bubble up again when the games are over. On the one hand, it's nice that there's still something that unites people from different nations and origins, but on the other hand, I'm always amazed at the importance of Soccer and these games in particular. An importance that makes people so blind that organizations like UEFA and FIFA can skim billions from it and enrich themselves with many corrupt things. In addition, professional football players have an income that should drive the blush of shame in the face. But we go along with it, we pay for everything, because it is the time when they deliver us like little messiahs from the omnipresent evil world, political conflicts, the bills we cannot pay, Our bosses and the daily work, our personal fears and the omnipresent Corona virus issue and take us away into a carefree world (at least for 90 minutes). Sometimes I wish we had more than just that to change our view from the bad to something better. How ever: Welcome to "panem et circenses". Strictly speaking, the picture was made during the 2018 World Soccer Championships, but it applies just as much today during the European Championships.
