This pattern of bark shedding mostly occurs in cities; most botanists think it's due to air pollution. It looks fascinating but is probably a sign that the tree doesn't think much of the air quality locally. You've captured it with great clarity.

It looks strange enough, hopefully it will not harm the tree. I'd like botanists think less and specify the reasons for sure.
