Description

WAY back, some 22 years ago now, I had completed Ocarina of Time, and finally got to play through Link to the Past. I even got a hold of the very well done comic that was done for Link to the Past for Nintendo Power. And, I was inspired to write. Here's the thing. The internet was a very different beast then. Deviantart was around, but in terms of finding quality TLOZ fanart, you were a bit limited. Plus, well. I was on dial-up. I spent quite a bit of time on Fanfiction.net. I can remember finding a few good fics, but most of what I read got me thinking I could do better. In fact, I could not. I was 12. However, I did start writing a story. I imagine the roles were reversed, with Zelda being the hero, and Link being a prince in need of rescue. I wrote quite a bit in this faded single-subject notebook (I still have it!) with at on of notes in the margins. And sometime after "Chapter Three" I came to an important realization. Largely, it was sparked in part by Ursula K. Le Guin. I read "The Wizard of Earthsea." I read something Ursula (Another Oregonian!) wrote about writing, and while I don't remember exactly what it was, I do remember going through my rough draft and crossing out all the names and putting in my own. "Zelda" became "Aryn," (My middle name) and "Link" became "Sev." "Ganon" became "Nagon." I started a second draft. Then a third. At some point the name "Aryll" sorta happened, though for a while it was an idea for a daughter for Aryn. The character of Dizav, however, has been there since the very first version. And even to my limited brain of my 12-year-old self, there was always a spark between them. (Really, reading that old draft, it's pretty clear I had no idea what to do with how they interacted. Conversations would start to go into this "comfortable" direction, and then just end abruptly.) It serves as a kind of proof of a theory I hold that the story always exists, we just have to learn how to find it. Anyway, This would eventually become "The Chronicles of Golide." I've got THREE books done, and released through Amazon. (Just ask for Lyle Aryn at your local bookstore, or purchase the ebook from the Kindle store) I have two more books planned, and after that? We'll see. I wanted to do a bit of art to pay homage to the roots. I hope you accept this humble offering. And, since it's #pridemonth, who else should share the scene with our brave hero than the lovely Dizav? I had a different outfit setup, but I couldn't really get the top and the pants to match on her. Scrolling through, i stumbled upon Twilight Sorceress and decided to give it a go. I think it work! The shoes, though, are from the "Order of the Huntress: The Priestess" set. (I'm still allergic to heels.) I kinda love showing off the difference in height between these two. I'm pretty happy with the end result. Which wraps up June, and now it's on to July! I've working on a massive render project that I hope to complete by the 4th, and after that we'll just have to see what fun July brings us! (I've written several ideas down on my whiteboard, so I should be kept fairly busy even with fresh inspiration doesn't take hold.) I've also got something special to show off that I might just have to bust out a quick render ahead of the 4th just because I can. I hope everyone is well. With 60-100 new posts every day from those I follow, I keep finding myself falling behind. I apologize. I do go in and look at almost all of them, and hit that like button. Have a great week, and if I don't see you before then, a great Fourth of July celebration!

Keep writing Lyle. I'll look 0n Amazon

I remember attending a seminar for aspiring writers at Balticon years ago where the panel spent most of the hour trying to convince a standing room only audience that the days of Don Wolheim's DAW Books were over, that paperbacks had a shelf life of two and a half weeks and Star Wars, Star Trek and X File spinoffs were the safer sales than original concept pieces. Quite annoyed, I raised the topic of self publishing, which was in its infancy back then - no Amazon, no pay and print - and was dismissed as it was too expensive, too logistically challenging, and mostly, too much of a threat to the writers on the panel.

My countering with Hefner's starting Playboy with borrowed money didn't help, nor did the little quip that you could pursue your dream and self publish for less than the cost of overhauling an Jaguar E-type cylinder head. I still blame the latter on Captain Morgan... . On the elevator an Aussie man about our age told us that he too thought the panel was up to their ears in poo, that he and an Indonesian woman he'd never met face-to-face had collaborated on a portal piece and self published in trade paperback after setting up a promotional website. They did all of the stuff writers do today and did it well - the novel was a little campy by design but quite enjoyable and well researched down to the description and use of Elizabethan ships and weapons.

He should have challenged the panel. Rubbed it in their noses, even.

Life interfered over the years and we never finished our story, though the plot points and character arcs still linger in my head. I keep up with writers' blogs long after drooping out of the ABA - maybe your work will give me the boot to the backside. If you want to talk writing send me a personal Lyle. Time is crucial to all of us, so no pressure, no risk of slight if you haven't any to spare. It's my pleasure and privilege regardless.

I will definitely make time.

Part of my goal with the art is to create networking opportunities. I'm not a naturally outgoing person, so I've got to work the only way I know how. To strike up conversations.

Thanks for your reply. I'll be dropping you a line later today.

They both look awesome, and you really did a great job on the lighting! Keep up the good work, sir!

I don't know how many times I took a stab at writing stories when I was a kid. I wrote a LOT of short stories (3 - 4 pages), and even though I was a rather lousy student (I bore easily), my teachers told me several times I had a talent for it. I continued doing it all through high school, and even when I was in the Air Force.

I never had ANY idea I'd still be working on a story for over 10 years... Not in my wildest dreams..... But I'm enjoying every second of it!

Enjoyment is the reason to do it.

That's what I believe. Those that are doing it strictly for profit have kinda ruined it for the rest of us.

Its always nice to hear the evolution of how a story came about or what inspired you to develop a character for one of them. For me it was taking a creative writing course in the 9th grade...I can't help myself making up stuff since then! Thanks for sharing your story...your render looks awesome by the way! Have a great 4th of July! :-)

I took one in the 9th grade, too. Probably the most important class I took in High School, over all.

The road for you has been long and winding for sure. You are a very talented writer. My stories tend to get told in a paragraph so i am probably 'irredeemable'. That is not even a real word is it? Its like saying 'irregardless,' only dumber.
