Description
An exercise with spotlight settings (which are still new to me) to see how shadows soften vis-à-vis light size and spread etc.
Shows up a few faults with the bump map, but we are reaching the point where we need 8K images and the accompanying detail for skins — imho

Nice, dramatic shadow contrast. I'm working a lot of this out right now, too. Sadly, we're using different rendering engines and content but the physical behavior of light remains unchanged so I figure I have a lot to learn from your journey, Paul. Thank you for sharing!

A bit of reflection in the eyes would take it to the next level, cool hair and outfit... ;)
paul_gormley
You are dead right, Rhol, I thought about it, but went with the shadow alone as I wanted to do a Rembrandt type face, will have to play with a second spot or muted hdri :)

The light does work - especially the hair. No matter how much we fuss over pores sand tears, we still have to deal with that...

Lighting is perhaps the most difficult aspect of 3D to do, for it is there were big decisions are often made. Too much light, not enough, too dark, too bright, contrast to high or not enough...wow its enough to make your head spin! Entire books have been written on this subject and yet its always up to the artist to determine the amount desired!
You've done and excellent job with this portrait, as it shows a high level of artistic control over your images! :-)

many thanks for your encouraging words, Johnny, much appreciated
