This was a piece commissioned by a friend for a story he's working on. Kassie is a human-cat hybrid, part of a race that was genetically engineered (unethically) by the military to serve as soldiers. The program was shut down when it's existence was leaked, but now the world had to come to terms with the rights of this new species, which had eventually been named "Nekotachi". The program meant to engineer them sterile, but somehow that alteration failed. Kassie has cybernetic prosthetics to replace parts of her that were injured in an explosion. Autistic, technically inclined, and with a flexible view of the law, she attracted the attention of a smuggling crew who brought her on as the ship's engineer and tech expert.
