Description

In updating my Hummingbirds v1 (2011), there has been a significant name change within the last 10 years. The "Magnificent" Hummingbird is no longer called "Magnificent". It now had returned to its original name from 1829, "Rivoli's Hummingbird". Rivoli's Hummingbird was named in honor of Francois Victor Massena, the Duke of Rivoli when the species was described by René Lesson in 1829. The common name, Rivoli's Hummingbird, remained until the early 1980s, when it was changed to Magnificent Hummingbird. In 2017, the name was restored to Rivoli's Hummingbird when the American Ornithological Society officially recognized the species as a "distinct" species from the Talamanca Hummingbird (of the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama). Rivoli's hummingbird is found in North America from Southern Arizona (USA) to western Panama. In the image, the male is prominently shown with its magenta, turquoise and green plumage and its female counterpart (in the upper right third) looks similar to most female hummingbirds, green on top, off-white on the lower parts. In the distance, a male Calliope hummingbird is shown. I expect both of the updated hummingbird sets to appear in November 2021.
