Description
According to Breton tradition, the ankou is a personified death. But he is also a spirit that watches over cemetery graves and appears on behalf of the dead. He has to get around and protect the graves from unwanted intruders.

Very well done this Ankou, but the definition of the Ankou is not the same on all Brittany. The Ankou travels in a squeaky cart from village to village in order to signal to the inhabitants that death is about to strike, then he goes to the house concerned and takes away the soul of the deceased. I think there are other definitions depending on the village.
