Description

In the chapter "The Thunder Child" H.G Wells describes a battle between the torpedo ram Thunder Child and a trio of Martian war machines. The ram is ultimately unsuccessful, but does ram and destroy one of tripods. This image, inspired by one by Steve Gallagher, depicts that part of the battle, the two other tripods coming to the aid of the first. I more of less replicated Gallagher's scene but added the third tripod and some gulls. The War Machines, from DAZ, are the same ones used by Gallagher. The Thunder Child is Chris Shell's free SMS Emden WW1 German Scout Cruiser with cannon flashes from the Lewis Gun and wake from IN Wavecutter. The explosion is from 3D Explosions. The sea is Big Blue and the sky is one of Flink's sunsets and the gulls are from Flock Formations. Composed and rendered In Poser 11 Pro, post-processed in Corel Photo Paint to add splashes from Water Splash Effect Set 2 from Frostbo at ArtStation.

Fine image! Though I cannot help wondering how the tripods got suchh very long legs. Doesn't look like shallow water.

Yep. I picked up on that while I was compositing the final image. Unfortunately, repositioning the tripods would seriously affect the framing of the distant one. I may yet give it a shot.

Wonderful work! This reminds me greatly of the song Farewell Thunderchild from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds album.

LOL I hadn't seen this one - and here's Emden - the last ship built for the Kaiser with reciprocating engines...thinking maybe Thunder Child was termed a 'torpedo ram' which is interesting as Wells might have gotten his idea from Polyphemus ramming harbor defenses in a trial. All cool stuff - neat to see this in Rendo. Headed off to find Emden "The Swan of the East."
