I arrived at the bakery a half-hour before Kat or Jonan were supposed to be there. I picked a table where I could see most of the other tables. There were plenty of empty tables near me they might sit at. I ordered some coffee and a sandwich and set up my laptop so I could pretend to be working. I considered logging into the chat room to tell them how the date was going, but I knew Kat would kill me, and when Jonan heard about it, he’d know I was there. Kat arrived first. She almost overlooked me. She’d never seen my glamour. She nodded when she did recognize me and took a seat nearby. -You look almost good for a human, -she texted me. - You should see my Unseelie glamour, - I sent back. She looked up at me, an eyebrow raised. -It’s Unseelie, so of course, it’s hideous, -I sent and grinned. Someone walked in and Kat smiled. A tall lanky blond approached. “Kat?” He asked. “Jonan.” “It’s good to finally meet you.” He sat down. “Sorry.” He took her hand. “It’s okay. I understand. I can’t imagine what it was like.” “I don’t want to talk about it,” Kat said. “Of course. Let’s eat.” “How’s work been?” Kat asked after they got food. I watched closely to make sure Jonan didn’t slip anything into it. “It’s been quiet.” “Which is how you like it.” He grinned. “Yep. How about you?” I took Jonan’s picture and sent it to Mitch. “There’s a new release coming soon so things are crazy. I even had to go into the office a few times.” Jonan made a face. “The horror.” “It was awful. A thirty-minute drive each way.” “That’s not fun.” “If I didn’t work from home, I’d live closer. Fortunately, this only happens once in a while.” “That’s good.” “I didn’t tell you, they found my missing friend.” “Now, that’s good news. What happened? Is she okay?” “A bit beat up. She’s still in the hospital. Some nut job kidnapped her then decided he didn’t want her. He beat her up and dumped her in the park.” “Glad he didn’t just kill her.” “Yeah, me too. He has a couple of kids too,” Kat added. “Is this the case Knight is working on?” “Everyone’s working on it, but it’s why he went back early.” “He does more than digital recreations, doesn’t he?” “I don’t know everything he does. I just know they’re doing what they can to find the kids.” “Good. Why people do stuff like that is beyond me. More people should be like you and only hurt videogame characters.” I rolled my eyes, knowing better. Kat saw me but managed not to react. “Sorry,” I mouthed. Mitch texted me. -No problems found. I was not involved. - I half grinned. Mitch had offered to check out Jonan when he learned what I was doing over my lunch break. I continued to listen while I ate my lunch and pretended to browse some random website. I left before they did but sat in my car watching. I had parked so I could see inside and had a clear view of the two. They were holding hands when they left. Kat kissed Jonan’s cheek before heading to her van. Jonan smiled in surprise and went to his own car. I watched as he drove off. -Thanks, -Kat sent. --Not a problem He seems nice.- -He is. - I couldn’t resist. -Too good for an Unseelie.- -Hey!- I chuckled. I was going to pay for that. I followed her for a bit to make sure Jonan wasn’t doing the same before heading back to work.
