Description

Here's the updated Moluccan (aka salmon-crested) Cockatoo from my updated "Threatened, Endangered Extinct v3" (being re-released soon). In the background, flies a couple Scarlet-collared Flowerpeckers, which are also included in the set. This "vulnerable" species is endemic to Seram, Ambon, Saparua and Haruku in South Maluku, Indonesia. Its diet consists of berries, nuts, seeds, coconuts and insects and their larvae. Female cockatoos is larger than the males on average. Cockatoos bond for life. This species was almost brought to extinction by unsustainably trapping for the cage-bird market. In the 1980s, with an estimated 74,509 population, close to 10,000 birds a year were being trapped and exported from Indonesia. Although reported international trade was declared illegal by the mid-1990s, trappers remained highly active and birds are openly sold within Indonesia. This illegal trade was prolific during religious riots during 2004, and baseline estimates suggest 4,000 birds are removed from the wild annually in domestic trade. Add to this the commercial timber extraction, settlement and hydroelectric projects, which pose other major threats through resultant forest loss and fragmentation, and the Moluccan is still vulnerable to extinction. It is predicted that half the current population on Seram may be lost to conversion of forest in the next 25 years. Most forests has already been lost from Ambon and the coasts and lowlands of Seram. It has also been considered by growers a harmful pest to coconut palms and historically been persecuted for that. Under the Wild Bird Conservation Act, the Salmon-crested Cockatoo is prohibited from being imported into the United States. However, US born cockatoos are being bred in captivity. They are popular for their beauty and trainability (which makes them popular in trained bird shows).

Thank-you for the comment,... I'd put in the camera specs if it was actually a photograph, but it's not... it's an iray render done in DAZ Studio of my 3D birds models :)

Looking at mifdesign's and CoolDimension's comments, I see that your extraordinary 3D work - and information - for our culture and the preservation of wild life is not well known by some people on RR! Go on your superb work!

Thank-you so much. I'm glad my conservation message breaks through some of my images. That's my sneaky, subliminal mission behind most of the art I create ;)
