Here I used a shadow catcher for the ground, while that allows rendering underwater and above the water scenes.
No, I don't use planes for water; it is possible but for a fair price, i.e. advanced shaders. Otherwise it may look not very realistic.
Volumetric lighting and environment here is true volumetric, not faked and it's a lot to work there. The denser the atmosphere, the less visible the HDR environment. Yup. Dust, fog, volumetric dim lights makes it difficult to achieve. Grazing angle ruins underwater visibility - when water is not just a coloured plane - and that makes it good under those circumstances. Every single shader there, including atmo volumetric is mine.
