Frankly, they'd be here even if we weren't ruining their natural homes (although admittedly we are doing exactly that). But scavenging garbage is the easiest game in the four-footed world. Dead meat and garbage doesn't run, and doesn't bite back. Feral cats, dogs, rats, raccoons, skunks, foxes, and coyotes enjoy an easy-going urban environment. We humans make mountains of edible garbage for them, from potato skins to turkey left-overs. Why hunt when you can forage and live splendidly off human offal? I don't feel sorry for those free-loaders at all.
