It must have been lava I guess, the red tones and darker red must be iron. The cavities I assume were gasses or something with much lower density. Chances are it may have been submerged for millenia then rose later to surface. It's just a guess, I must read somewhere how it was formed, I have no idea how it really happened. Superb details, wonderful capture. Thank you for sharing, my dear Richard.

a big gaping mouth crying out, or a huge eye inside a massive red-rock skull. That's what this looks like in the right light. Another gaping photo, which also lets us see the colorations of this stone---whites, grays, some blacks, and of course that deep beautiful iron-ore orange. These closeups are formidable.
