Description

My respect for Mr. Biden's speech today in Poland! Experts say restrictions on freedoms of assembly and speech are likely to escalate in Russia as the war in Ukraine continues. RELATED: Tearful scenes at Kyiv train station https://bit.ly/3hJNQJM Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine has triggered an earthquake of global condemnation, including in his own backyard, where protests have swelled across the country in a remarkable outpouring of dissent against the Kremlin's deadly military assault. Antiwar protests erupted within hours of Russia's invasion Feb. 24 in more than 60 cities. The demonstrations, which range from massive rallies to single-person pickets, have continued even amid a fierce Kremlin crackdown. Anna protests for the first time in her life - against the president's war. Openly on the street, she risks harsh punishment. The 18-year-old dreams of studying linguistics and wanted to emigrate to the USA with her parents. Two years ago, they won a green card. Then came Corona, now the war. Her parents raised her liberally, her bisexuality no problem. At home, there is one rule: no TV, because it is all propaganda: "I love my country, the people, the culture, but I detest the government. What makes me so mad is that they tell me there is no war, just a military operation. But what's the difference?" Anna's father is proud of his daughter, but he is also afraid of the repression. His own protest is therefore more covert: he sticks up posters at night: "That Putin is a bad guy has been clear to us for a long time. But this is beyond good and evil. In Putin, the devil has come out and become president in Russia." The head of the Russian Writers' Union, Nikolai Ivanov, sees it differently. He adopts the Kremlin propaganda and calls the Russian attack against Ukraine a "special operation." There can be no question of war there. And Denis Ganich of the "National Freedom Movement" supports the narrative of the "denazification" of Ukraine. The population is being "liberated" by the Russian army. I wish you nevertheless all a nice Sunday! PS. This statement is not directed against the Russian people!

Couldn't agree more! I wish someone would do just that, for the sake of Anna and all the Russians like her, as well as for all the Ukrainians who most certainly experience this as "war," no matter what Putin calls it! Powerful image!

I hope that will happen very soon, otherwise this war will continue to escalate! I don't feel like the poison gas clouds will soon be flying around my ears!

Stalin too killed or starved millions of his own people. The sooner Putin is removed from power the sooner the wounds can begin to heal.

Great scene presenting the pain and the horror of war, dear Ute! Good diplomacy and understanding could have worked much better than murder and catastrophe. He has to go! No excuses!

Very powerful image and the story behind it is moving. I feel for your Anna and such characters are very easy to feel sympathy for and to love. The facts you share as inspiration for your story and picture are so disturbing. Thank you for sharing, Ute.

Encore une belle image très émouvante. Je ne sais pas qui pourra arrêter Poutine, comme tous les tyrans il est un danger pour l'humanité. C'est sans doute le peuple russe qui a la clef du problème.

The innocent civilians in Russia suffer in their own way during this conflict! Thanks for reminding us of that with your poignant work of art!

Have a good new week friend!

A powerful image and statements here, Ute! He HAS to go! And sooner or later he will. I prefer the "sooner" option.

As Artists, I am glad to see so many speaking out on here. Just keep the Russian people in your heart and we do the Ukrainian people. I read much that says they do not want this horrible action of Putin's either. Many have gone to jail for saying so.
