348 Days
I had been stationed on this hell hole rock of a planet for 348 days. The damned planet existed somewhere deep in the armpit of the universe. The place had done it's best to try and kill me every single 'fn' day. From the animal and plant life to the desert marauders, to the diseases, everything here wanted me and all like me dead. I had made it and now I was a short timer. At 365 days I rotated out. Back to world. I had it made now. Due to being 'short' my duties were cut back to supporting Base Ops. For the rest of this tour, I would no longer have to look at that stinkin' desert or its butt ugly inhabitants, No longer would I have to get shot at from the rocks while I hunkered down and called in airstrikes on the local bad guys.
348 days, that was the day I saw her. It was late at night, and I was walking patrol in a village that was well within the perimeter of our outpost and the land we had secured. She was a desert girl and judging from her makeup and piercings, she was probably one of the 'neutrals' in this local uprising we were sent here to 'calm down.' Her dark brown skin and her exotic beauty hit me like a punch to the side of the head. She was totally gorgeous and the most alluring woman I have ever seen.
She was riding a big, ugly, smelly Skalarog. It was late at night. I thought it odd that she would be leaving the safety of the encampment to travel the desert at night. I approached her and spoke in the local language to her. I told her she should wait until morning. I tried to explain to her that by waiting, she would guarantee that she would travel with other traders and the escort grunts assigned to them. I used to be one of those grunts, always supporting and guarding the locals that traded outside the safe zone.
Well, she was anything but grateful. She let loose on me with a string of swear words that made the language me and my compadres used seem mild. She told me that my advice was unasked for, and certainly my advance was aimed at insulting her. She then proceeded to tell me what would happen to me when she told her father and brothers how I had propositioned her. They were sure to come and beat me for my crude behavior.
A bit dejected, I shrugged and said, "Hey it's up to you lady. Go for it." I turned and started to walk away. It was then I heard her voice behind me. She said, 'if I was to wait until morning, would I be staying with you tonight?" 'WTF,' I thought to myself. "That's totally up to you lady," I grumbled. She then said, "OK, then it is settled, I will stay with you tonight." 348 days and I was almost free. It was now a sure thing I would be " re-upping" for another tour on this rock.
