Description

Still trying to convey the scale and depth of the image. Ships are leaving a Dyson sphere (a hollow man made planet.) Any tips?

  1. The lights on the exterior are too big for the scale youare trying to portray. 2. I would also suggest using a texture map to portray the bumpiness of the exterior. Take a look at "The Denali" on my site (shayhurs) as an example. 3. Scale down the ships to 10-15% of what they are now. I think that would help as well. 4. Unless this is a binary system, there should not be as much lighting on the exterior of the sphere. Put a lightsource inside the sphere pointing out the entrance with shadow mapping turned on and crank it up to say 200% so it reflects off of your ships. 5. I think you need more stars in the starfield as well. Maybe thinner at the point behind the entrance (due to the light coming out of the sphere) and more the farther away you get from the entrance. It's really an improvement since the first one I saw here. For the scale, you need something we could recognize to be the basic of the general proportion (only an example: a whole city or a very big dock/harbor just inside the opening would give the idea of a gigantic, er, Tyson sphere). Playing with scale is very funny if you achieve the desired result, I often do it. As for the rest, I think shayhurs already said it all...

Okay, I know I haven't done anything other than abstracts, but in my previous life I did a lot of Imagery Analysis so I've got an eye for scale. Just looking at the size of the opening and the size of your ship, the sphere is way to small or the entrance & ship are way to big to get the sense of scale you're trying to achieve. My humble suggestion, besides those already mentioned, would be to make the sphere much larger. Make the emphasis on the ship and the entrance not the sphere itself. Being a huge Sci-Fi fan, I really like the concept and what youre trying to do. Keep it up and Ill keep a look out for the next version! Keep it up!
