Description
Big Sara was recovered from the Morrison formation deposits in Wyoming in 2015. It was painstakingly removed from the hill it was found in and then sold for 350,000 Euros to Zoic a company based in Trieste, Italy. Zoic reassessembled the 70 percent intact specimen (and presumably provided the plaster casts of missing bones) before putting her up for auction in Paris in October 2020 where she sold for 2.5 million Euros. There is a great deal of contraversy around the lucrative trade in fossil remains, with billionares and various loaded celebrities purchasing rare fossils which subsequently disappear from science.
In this case the current owners of 'Big Sara' (internet rumour is that the name was from a Bob Dylan song) - the Richmond Group in Bournemouth have bequeathed it to the West Quay Shopping centre in Southampton.
Whatever the merits and problems with this 'free trade in fossils' (personally I think they should be considered part of the common heritage of us all) I am grateful for the fact that it has allowed me to go and see a mostly complete speciment of Allosaurus in my home town. There are not many of these opportunities outside of London, so this was a rare treat.
