Description

_________________________________________________________________________ The complex was built by the Tiwanaku, a pre-Inca civilization, who dominated the southern half of the central Andes between the 5th and 11th centuries. At first a small place of settlement, the site which developed into a city between 400 and 900 AD. J.-C. Spiritual and political center of the Tiwanaku culture, it is one of the most important pre-Inca urban areas in the Andean region. in South America. The site was the capital of a mighty empire that spanned centuries and was characterized by the use of new technologies and materials in architecture, pottery, textiles, metals and basket making .The site is known for its architectural remains in built-in prefabricated elements. The stones are sandstone or andesite. Elements found in an incomplete state of finish make it possible to understand the method used to achieve surprising right angle excavations. The rocks were first struck using stone hammers, which can still be found in numbers at the site of andesite quarries, then slowly ground and polished with flat stones and sand. The largest element was estimated at 137 tons. _________________________________________________________________________
