Description

Well here we go. Don't be surprised if this isn't just the beginning. The US has become a nation ruled by zealots, a radical minority... A very short legal background. In the 18th century, abortion was completely legal before what was called the “quickening” of a fetus – when a woman could first feel fetal movement, or roughly four and a half months through a pregnancy. No state prohibited it, and it was common. Post-quickening, about half the states prohibited abortion at the time the Constitution was adopted. But even post-quickening, very few people were ever prosecuted for getting an abortion or performing an abortion in the founding era. Thus, if a woman living in New England in the 17th or mid-18th centuries wanted an abortion, no legal, social, or religious force would have stopped her. Official abortion laws did not appear on the books in the United States until 1821. Things began to change in the 1850s, and abortion before quickening did not become illegal until the 1860s. The American Medical Association came out against abortion. And then later, the Catholic Church announced that it was banning abortion as well. Congress then passed a law called the Comstock Act (1873) that prohibited the distribution of contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs (considered "immoral") through the mail. By the 1880s or so, abortion was outlawed nationwide. In the mid-20th Century, contraceptives became legal and then came Roe in early 1973.

It's all very unnerving. I do remember an observation by a historian that the Roman Catholic church and the Papacy discovered that the embryo and the fetus had a soul and was therefore human only after the Bubonic Plague had ravished Europe, killing as much as one third of the population. Populating a shattered labour pool was an economic necessity.

As for the present zealots, it is the business of zealots to impose their values on everyone.

Oh, don't get me started.... These pathetic pieces of s**t in the SCOTUS all need to get jobs sacking groceries, and let those with a grain of common sense uphold the laws. That's assuming anyone in "leadership" positions HAS common sense.

Well done, Barb.

There's one thing being a decent person and religious, but then it's a different thing with the ultra religious nut jobs. These people wont ask you to believe, they will tell you to believe and they will justify it all in the name of their god. Let's just toss a few more books on the fire eh, scarry days ahead I'm afraid. Seems like the world is regressing insted of growing into a better future... ;(

Well said, Barbara! Far be it from me to add my own comment as it has never been an issue but for those who have to face it, then that's a whole new ball game. Lovely work Barbara!

Depressingly appropriate image. Recent supreme court decisions eroding women's rights, voters, rights, and the ability of the EPA to prevent pollution are breathtakingly retrograde, as if they're determined the US should return to a 19th century WASP patriarchy

Yup. And I'm incredibly angry. My body, my choice and no one else's. This is just the beginning of the loss of rights.

My husband found a posting in early May that said "He who hath not a uterus should shut the f**keth up. Fallopian 13:13" A bunch of old white guys have no business telling females what they can or can't do with their bodies.

It's like schizophrenia, the same people who are demonstrating against abortion are against stricter gun laws. It's not better to let the child come into the world and later have it shot because of lax gun laws.
