My dad owned a '38 Plymouth that looked exactly like this one except that it was black. In the winter of '47 on a family emergency trip to Quebec, we hit a patch of ice and rolled over. The car rolled completely over and landed upright. Even though we were in the middle of nowhere, within minutes a Canadian farmer came along with a pair of workhorses and pulled us out of the ditch. Now bear in mind that this was decades before car seats, toddler seats and cell phones. No one was hurt, not even my baby brother who my mother had been holding in her lap.
MY dad offered the farmer a substantial gratuity which the gentleman first refused but later accepted. We all got back in the car, that old '38 Plymouth, and continued on our way to Levis. We got there and days later drove back home again without so much as a flat tire.
Whenever I hear anyone using the expression "they don't build them like they used to," that old Plymouth immediately flashes to mind. I don't know what happened to the car. My dad traded it in on a DeSoto a few months later. There's something in me that would like to believe that's the same auto with a later paint job. (Red is so ostentatious! When I was a kid, virtually all cars were black.)

Henry Ford gave customers their choice of colors as long as it was black. all I care about having now is white. the paints with color are too expensive to repaint. Thanks for your memories and comment

Very good shot but I guess it's not destiny for a car :) Not bad..

A splendid barn find, minus the barn! Have you any idea how much a refurbished model would sell for today? I've even heard that companies providing support for the film industry will fight tooth and nail for old vehicles like this Plymouth with a view to fixing them up like new for their inventory. There's a company in Great Britain, I've forgotten it's name, that offers movie producers every kind of vehicle from early motorcycles to tanks from WWII. Great photograph.

What a surreal piece! A car that looks right out of "Bonnie and Clyde" and a trailer in the background that says "alice"! Is it Flo's trailer? Great photo!
