drinking buddy has saved me a stool at the bar.

It's astonishing how much folks can read into a few facial expressions. Since this image is an illustration from a short story, I can tell you that the bartender, Doug, and my buddy on the stool, Cody, are definitely not friends. Shortly after I arrived an altercation would result in Cody being ejected from the premises. I ended up paying for his bar bill.
