Description
After Frans Mortelmans
I start a new series of 10 images, in no real order this time. it is a question of drawing up each time a portrait of a woman, strong enough to affirm her identity in a world dominated by patriarchy. These women of different eras, origins, and different ages continue to fight for their visibility, despite prejudice. My list is not exhaustive, there is so much to say; likewise, the dominant male gaze remains on the lookout under the presence, in each image, of an invisible man, who retains a share of power. Finally, each painting chosen places this fight for better visibility for women in a history of art largely shaped by men.

Female crafts jobs are not very common - yet. But I think it is a matter of time. Workout classes in body strenght are dominated by women here in my hometown, sooner or later there will be more and more craft women.

what I appreciate in manual trades, apart from the strength and endurance they often require, is a certain form of know-how and ingenuity to understand how to shape the material.

Great composition; interesting haw the wooden studwork of what she's building also resembles the bars of a cage.... or maybe a fence to keep out the chauvinism!

Well done, for noticing the cage metaphor. this framework forms both the structure of what this woman builds, and also the protection against the machismo that remains locked up outside.

I'm always drawn to fit, capable women. She seems to be ignoring the invisible man who is measuring something. Really nice and I enjoyed looking up Frans Mortelmans' image, as well. Most of what I found by him was still life but this picture of the elderly craftsman was really touching. Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed viewing. =)
