Description

Morina found Drepal with Emeton. He was giving her instructions as to the limits of what she could do to question the supposed assassin. “I spoke to the senate,” she said. “They said if he’s part immortal, take over and bring him to Ertonia. They’ll find out what he was up to and punish him accordingly.” “How will we know if he is?” Emeton asked. “The healers were uncertain.” Morina frowned. “There used to be magical flowers that grew here in the garden that I could use.” “The ones that change colors?” Drepal guessed. Morina nodded. “They turned orange for non-mages, purple for mages, and green were immortals. Unfortunately, they’re gone.” “They died out when we took out the fountain,” Emeton explained. “We had a couple of kids almost drowned in it.” “Do they grow anywhere else?” Drepal asked. Morina thought for a moment. “In Ertonia. Do you want to help me get some?” “Until the Yarbs are gone, I need her and Tercala here. I don’t trust Kamlia,” Emeton told her. “Your majesty? Please forgive the intrusion.” Elos approached timidly. “What do you need?” Emeton asked. “I overheard a little of what you said and it sounds like you might be looking for Sharflat.” Emeton nodded. “We are.” “I have a small plant in my room.” “How are you growing Sharflat in your room?” Morina demanded. “They need running water.” “I change the water frequently. It doesn’t thrive, but it does have a few blossoms. “Back about the time the princess was adopted, a healer told me I could use the berries to counteract the slow aging spell my wife put on me. I delayed using them because of the trouble the princess was having. Then, when I heard you were going to tear down the fountain, I saved a small plant. You’re welcome to it.” “Thank you. We’ll get back to you unharmed.” Emeton promised. “Thank you, sire. But now that there are others here who will live longer, I’m not dreading the longevity so much.” “You cared for this plant for over twenty years. You’ve earned the right to keep it.” Elos nodded. “Thank you.” He went and retrieved the flower. “I’ll give this back,” Morina promised. She and Drepal took the plant down to the prison. There, she held the flower up and touched the elf’s face. The flower turned yellow. Morina frowned and left. Drepal followed. “Officially, there’s nothing I can do,” she told Drepal once they were outside of the prison. “What does yellow mean?” Drepal asked. She had never seen it turn yellow. “That the plant is too weak to use. It’s inconclusive,” Morina lied. “Without knowing for sure, I’m not supposed to get involved. But, I am supposed to keep an eye on you and keep you out of trouble. Dealing with those who might get you in trouble will qualify.” “Don’t get yourself in trouble on our account,” Drepal told her. “We’ll find a way to get the information we need.” “I’ve always had a soft spot for the hidden lands and Menthanla specifically. The senate allows me a little leeway because of it.” “If we need you, we’ll let you know,” Drepal agreed.
