Description

I've started work on more parrots, adding the Amazon Parrots of South and Central America to the Songbird ReMix library, which will eventually form "Parrots of the World" Volumes 5 and 6. The Red-spectacled Amazon gets its name the red band that crosses the forehead and ocular region. Other defining markings are the red feathers on the base of the thighs and the telltale red band on the edge of the wings that stretches from that primary flight feathers to the shoulders (which is visible only in flight). It is endemic to Brazil’s southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul, where it is an inhabitant of Araucaria forest in the north, as well as being more widely in the lowland broadleaf woodlands that punctuate the savannas across the south of the state. The species is partially migratory, moving north in winter, at which season it also, at least periodically, reaches the adjacent state of Santa Catarina. They eat a variety of fruit in spring and summer and in late autumn concentrate on seeds of Araucaria (a type of evergreen conifer) This Amazon, as the majority of its cousins, is endangered thanks to habitat destruction which is compounded by pet trade. Collectors usually remove all nestlings, cutting trees and often destroying nests in process; this is now probably the major threat to this species. Despite the presence of many protected areas within the species's range, none is adequate either in staffing levels or in size. The last population count, performed in the 1990s, had the population at 7,500–8,500 mature adults. Rendered in Firefly without any postwork.

They are beauties! It is such a shame that they are endangered because of humanities greed!
