Description

There have been many versions of the tale of Tristan and Iseult, from the original Celtic legend, through the medieval romances, to the pomp of Wagnerian opera. The earlier versions of the tale recount how the Irish princess, golden-haired Iseult, is faced with a dilemma on finding the body of the Cornish knight Tristan: to heal him (she was the greatest healer in all Ireland) or to exact revenge for his slaying of her kinsman, Morholt? I made this following a suggestion of Jdwtrxk (a fair few months ago I must confess); I have tried to illustrate this story a few times before, but was never satisfied with the result. This took quite a few iterations, and though the final image is a long way from what I originally had in mind, I thought I'd post it anyway...

Hey- it came out great and worth the wait :) Thanks!

This legend is worth repeating in one form or another over and over. So many cultural variants. One of the most far reaching contemporary spins was Murphy's portrayal of Iseult in the "Last Kingdom" though I'm not sure a 9th century near barbarian Cornish virgin queen/seer was supposed to be her. Might have stolen the name.

Well I guess as she was married to King Mark of Cornwall she qualifies as a Cornish queen too.... But as you say this trope is widespread in European literature; Dairmud and Graine, Lancelot and Guinever, etc.etc.

The Last Kingdom plays pretty fast and loose with a lot of both legendary and historical figures - just (look what they did to Aethelflead, who was one of the most prominent women in early British medieval history)...
