Description
“GaneShiva'' is a large, densely layered digital image mounted on a custom Duratran lightbox illuminating the highly-detailed and richly-coloured surface. The work examines the role of image circulation in manifesting and sustaining stereotypes associated with Indian beliefs and culture. The work preys on the clichès perpetuated by cheap consumer goods commonly sold at tourist markets or on Goan beaches. The images recall the circulation of kitsch and vernacular photography that seeks to define and fetishize Indian culture within specific terms, but the juxtaposition of the work’s lavish material form with this imagery complicates these assumptions and requires the viewer reassess the use and validity of these stereotypes.
