Even so, Scarlett will never be hungry again and Rhett still doesn't give a d!mn.
It would certainly have been a very different film. Lauren Bacall would have been mis-cast; unlike Vivien Leigh, there's nothing of the ruthless alley-cat in her. But Vincent Price would have been utterly believable as a greedy, self-centered cad pretending to be an Anti-bellum gentleman, something Clark Cable didn't quite pull off.
These thoughts aside, it's a riveting piece of art.
