I worked in a gas station much like this one, just out of High School before leaving to attend college. earned enough money to eat. I worked nights in the engineering building while attending college. it was 5 floors and I was doing the top 3 floors by myself. 2 younger teenagers "was doing or not" the first 2 floors. there was no elevator and I had to struggle with a very heavy buffing machine up 3 floors every night. still, I was able to eat at the best cafe in town (least expensive). I worked at a gas station in Los Gatos,California where I was fired because I would not lie to a customer.

Great story! In my college days I split my working time at the campus book store and the local grocery where I was promptly canned for not bagging the customers purchases fast enough! Yeah, these neighborhood filling stations were prevalent in the area where I was raised. There was one down the street from me. Connally's I believe was the proprietor's name. He sold gasoline, diesel and kerosene under the name, Sunoco. In the old days they use to sell coal out of a bin they had in the back of the station. I use to use their air pump to inflate my bicycle tires. Back then using the pump was free.
