Description

Nobody knows who built it, but once we landed on Mobor IV it obviously wasn't long before we found it. The structure was thousands of years old, and had no obvious purpose even though it was eight hundred kilometres long. There was no other trace of any inhabitants on Mobor IV, no towns or cities, no bodies, no more artefacts. It was quickly confirmed that it was artificial and made of sophisticated alloys, but since it was just a huge frame with no machinery attached it remains another of the galaxy's mysteries. Markus loved walking past it when he took a break, wondering all the while who built it and why. Made in Blender using the Fractal Machine (Blender Market, it's on sale, grab it quickly if you're going to bother as I think the sale ends Monday) and a figure from DAZ Studio imported using the Diffeomorphic plug-in. The scene reports as 54,323,538 polygons in Blender's viewport. I recently upgraded my Mac Pro to 128GB of RAM and being able to make scenes like this is one of the benefits. I would have been able to do it with the 64GB I had before but certainly not at the same fractal resolution. No post-work other than addition of text, the image came from Blender's Cycles render engine using the compositor to add the haze effect with the Cycles Mist pass. Definitely having fun with this machine!

Can I move to that planet?? I want off this one....

This is crazy cool! I'd like to add more memory to a couple of my 'puters... Maybe after all the stuff we're dealing with now ever settles down...

What was funny was that during the making of this image I managed to run out of memory trying to make the Apollonian fractal even more detailed. I laughed at myself then, I'd only had the 128GB installed for about four days. No matter what computer you give me I will push it to its limits eventually...

Still it is a better image than it would have been if I made it before the RAM upgrade.
