Excellent La Femme character.
I normally use the short cut to remove the ground. (CTRL+G) Also, if you select the Ground Plane in the parameters there are morph dials you can create hills on the ground. You can add material for the ground and for the sky.
If you want to get rid of the grid lines you can select the ground, then display>object style>smooth shaded. Or the short cut just select the ground (CTRL+SHIFT+8)
