Description
inspired by a poem by Mike Richard Gould, published here with permission of the author
Ghost
Sometimes I think I’m a ghost
Mostly invisible
On the periphery of vision
Sitting in plain sight
But transparent
Felt not seen
Experienced like a cold draft
Not acknowledged
Not real
Just a half forgotten memory
Doomed to wander the world
Sometimes bringing a smile
Often a shiver
Mostly indifference
There are others
I often think I should approach them
But I don’t
Frightened I might upset them
Think about my reaction to being approached
It is scary not knowing who you can trust
So I stand back
Imagine myself talking to them
What I might say
But move on
Ghosts are everywhere
You see them in crowds
You ignore them
They want to be included
But do not feel it
So remain stranded on the margins
Hoping some kind person will leave the door open
Allow them in
But otherwise
We just float through life
Figments of a dark imagination
