Description
Do you know why you can't see a vampire's reflection in the mirror? It's because vampires are reflections; they reflect the evil of mankind. For every human on Earth there is a vampire. Every vampire staked is another human dead. They are separate and yet connected much like our own shadows. Part of us and yet not.
So what is the vampire of an evil person like? Or are evil people just vampires?
Hungry creatures, preying on the weak, draining victims of every last drop of life.
People have tried to stop the birth of vampires by smashing mirrors. Breaking the birthplace of such evil, surely that would work?
But breaking mirrors merely makes more mirrors.
And the math never falters. For every person is a vampire. As a child is born, a vampire crawls out of the shiny surface. And killing a vampire kills the person it reflects.
So destroying the birthplace might not be possible. How about sealing it shut?
Ah, yes. Perhaps coating the shiny surface in solid metal. Or locking the mirror in a box. Would trapping a vampire work?
Sealing away all our mirrors. Seems rather pointless making them in the first place. Convincing people to do such things is a whole other matter in itself.
Some fools don't even believe in vampires.
If not mirrors though would vampires still exist? Other things reflect. Even if we refrain from making shiny things, there is one reflective surface we cannot live without.
Water.
Vampires can't handle holy water. Blessing it would kill the vampire right as it was born.
But then the human would also die.
The reverse works too. Killing a human kills the vampire that is reflecting them.
If you can find out which human the vampire is reflecting you can stop their evil prowling by ending that human's life. Vampires are very dangerous to fight directly given their unusual strength, sharp teeth and rather quick speed. Humans are so much easier to kill. The weakness of the vampire.
Which is why I have to kill you. The vampire prowling around here is too strong to fight directly, but he's yours.
And I cannot stop there. After all, every human alive means another vampire too. If I kill all the humans then I can finally free us all from all the evil vampires that lurk here.
I hope you understand- this IS for the greater good.

Yikes, imagine believing that killing everyone is the 'greater good'. Creepy story

Yes, thankfully this is just fiction! :)

That ending sent chills down my spine. Nice twist from a mundane lecture to a reason to kill.

Something about vampires that make them timeless, I remember reading 'Salem's Lot as a kid and being too scared to sleep, excellent work.

Thank you! They are very interesting and certainly as you say timeless creatures.
