Description

Many have asked the question “who’s the greatest rock guitarist ever?”… There are many candidates; Hendrix changed the way people thought about the instrument; Jimmy Paige the riffmeister; EVH ripped up the rulebook… But for me the greatest of all was Jeff Beck, who sadly passed away on Monday. From the blues with the Yardbirds, through his own rock bands with Rod Stewart, to the jazz fusion of the 70s with Jan Hammer and Stanley Clarke, and innumerable forays into innumerable other genres, he was the consummate musical innovator, combining virtuosity and power with astonishing and expressive subtlety. Who else could make a guitar sound like Classical Indian singing (in his interpretation of Nitin Sawhney’s “Nadia”) and just watch him playing “Where were you?” ( from where I have taken the title for this) live at Ronnie Scott’s ; and you will hear the most haunting music, and see the most astonishingly delicate technique with the vibrato, harmonics and bowing the volume that no one else has ever come close to matching… You might have gathered he was something of a personal hero and huge inspiration. A tragic loss to the world of music. RIP.

Yes I remember him he will be missed but to me, I grew up with the sounds of Hank with his echo chamber and the VOX Ac amps and his vibrato playing It is sad that most of the greats are all gone and only live in the realms of the CDs

I'd add Gary Moore, Carlos Santana and for those who like "sweet music", Hank Marvin...guys like Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour, Ritchie Blackmore considered he was one of the most influent guitar players. But what about you ? Where are you ? Superb though sad image here.

I agree wholeheartedly, I love the playing of those guys, but Beck went to places others didn't imagine (with possible exception of some jazz pioneers like John McLaughlin - but that's another story, maybe one I shall explore with some images when I am properly back in circulation, hopefully next month).

Before I read the narrative, and just on the image, my first thought was 'yep, that's how I feel about my guitar', but then I did read the narrative. He was a great guitarist. I watched a few of his old clips. He was so talented.

Even his more recent ones.... @Ronnie Scott's being the best probably, as he has a totally kick@ss band too. I had the privilege of seeing him at the Albert Hall Last year and he was mesmerising.

As a blues/rock/hard-rock/country player in a band, I like listening music when I create my 3D models. Jeff Beck was an excellent guitarist with many videos on YouTube. We could add to the above list many others, like Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Vai - for me the best - , Joe Bonamassa, Eric Clapton and some women like Samantha Fish, Ana Popovic, Laura Cox, Joan Jett and so on...But it appears that in the comments, the "ancestors" and roots of blues and rock are forgotten : Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, BB King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Rosetta Tharpe and many others.

Well that's why i qualified the list with "rock guitarist" otherwise Pat Metheny, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins, John McLaughlin, Django, Nguyen Le, Bireli Lagrene etc etc would also have to be added....the list would be endless (though fun to compile)😁...and ofc its all subjective. I love the playing of all those you have mentioned (Though I don't know Laura Cox and Samantha Fish) Santana, Moore, Marsden, Blackmore, Bolin, Morse, Vai, et.al, but I still maintain Beck had that extra ability to stretch the envelope and do something unexpected.

That's a stark, emotional image to go with your expression of grief at the passing of a masterful musician. Thanks for sharing, Joe, I really enjoyed viewing!

really unsure how i missed this...

Beck was masterclass, and indeed, it's a huge hit & loss for music.

next to Beck, i'm also a huge Gilmore fan... i remember reading something he said when asked why he doesn't play fast, and his reply was something to the effect of 'i can't play fast, so i decided to pay well'

lovely dedication, and i do hope you're feeling well these days yourself...

A most beautiful and moving tribute to Jeff Beck's contribution to the world of the guitar, and to me guitar players like him are demi-gods for ever. The sadness and atmo you've chosen here to illustrate also makes me think of George Harrison's famous ' While my guitar gently weeps' !

Very pleased you like this, and thanks for the kind comments. Great reference to Harrison's classic; it wasn't my original intention but now that you've pointed it out, its very true!
