The surprise attack had first brought panic and confusion on the orcs, but those were experimented and toughened warriors and they recovered very fast as soon as the rain of arrows stopped. Seeing the unknown assailants running toward them, they took a fighting stance. They did not plan to die without fighting. Having been taken by surprise, all the orcs were not well equipped. Arming themself was easy though, those without weapons took some on the corpses of their companions. Though, they surely did not have the time to put a chain-mail and several of them were hence wearing only a simple shirt. If orcs where known to be less intelligent than the other humanoid races, they were not stupid and it is the better armed and protected who went to fight the three assailants first, while the others split to surround them. But Marina, Sigrid and Romatzo had not charged stupidly at random. They did it in such a way that the layout of the tents prevented the surrounding, in order to have to really confront only one adversary at the time. The clash between the two groups was brutal. Very quick, Sigrid realised that the orc against who she fought would give her a lot of trouble. The son of the bitch, she thought, was a very good warrior. After several exchanges where neither of the two opponents gained the upper hand on the other, Sigrid made a mistake, letting to the orc the chance to close the distance and to strike. But this mistake was in fact deliberate. Having faith in her shield, Sigrid got ready to sustain the shock of the attack and to counter-attack. The orc gave a powerful blow with his axe. Despite the violence of the shock, the shield and Sigrid held. The orc was where Sigrid wanted and, lucky her, the axe got stuck in the shield. The short added moment of distraction given to the orc to pull it back was taken by Sigrid to strike with even more precision of her spear. The orc did not have time to avoid it and the tip went right through his skull. He fell on the ground in a large spay of blue blood. During the second of respite given by the death of the orc, Sigrid threw a quick look toward Marina and Romatzo and it is with surprise that she saw that her two companions had already killed several opponents when she had just killed her first one. Her trained eyes noted right away that the movements of the dwarf and of her sister were exceptionally fast and precise. She remembered what Marina told her about the awakening experience, that her companions and her had lived in the Guild of Adventurers and she was now witnessing the result of this experience with her own eyes. Sigrid was always considered like the best fighter, compared to her sister, but it was clear that she was now surpassed. But it was not the time to be distracted by that kind of thoughts, because a new orc was already rushing at her. In the prisoners tent, Kahiri and the humans heard the screams and the noises of the battle. Everything had happened so fast that the half-human and the prisoners only started to understand what was going on. Kahiri and Astrid went to look discretely by the opening of the tent. From the light of the flames which were ravaging the camp and despite the distance and the chaos of the battle, the redhead woman recognised Sigrid and Marina. A great excitement suddenly happened in the tent and Svadilfari had to be held back so that he would not leave it to go joined his mother. Some women discussed a short time to know if they should try to join the battle or not. Not all women from Hvittland were warriors, like Marina and Sigrid, but all those who respected themselves knew a minimum how to fight. But unarmed and weakened like they were, they judged quickly that they would risk to be more of an annoyance for their rescuers than a real help. And it was better for them to be all here to protect the children in case of. But Kahiri, her, was in shape and had no intention to stay and doing nothing. " I go outside. Try to help them." said she, before rushing at the exterior. Outside of the tent, an orc passed next to her without seeing her. He was trying to circle around Romatzo, Marina and Sigrid. Kahiri, without really thinking, threw herself against him with all her weight. Despite the enormous difference of size, the surprise attack destabilise the orc who fell on his back. Before he could react, Kahiri caught an iron cauldron that was lying on the ground next to her and sat on the torso of the orc. One, two, three hits, given with all the rage accumulated during years of abuse, made the skull of the orc exploded, from which the brain spilled of the ground. Kahiri stood up, panting and threw the dented and bloody cauldron away. She took the weapon from the hands of the corpse and rushed at the next orc near to her. Almost at the same moment that Kahiri had left the tent, a dagger opened the back of this one. Frightened, the prisoners stood back. When the opening was large enough, a dark head with silver hair went through it. " Don't be afraid. It's me, Minalva." said the elf to reassure them. Fearing that, lost for lost, some orcs decided to go after the prisoners, Minalva and her companions had decided, during the elaboration of the plan, that she would take care to make the prisoners flee while the others would take care of the orcs in close combat. Minalva had not wanted to go from the front to stay discreet, thus missing Kahiri. A little further, the battle was still raging. Romatzo just passed into his enemy's guard and struck him with a great axe blow in the stomach. The orc, that should weight more than two hundred pounds, was lifted from the ground like if he was weighting nothing. But the large axe continued its trajectory through the orc and cut him in half. The body fell on each side of Romatzo. But he did not have time to catch his breath, because two orcs, who had succeeded to squeeze through the tents, were already on him. Under his helmet, Romatzo smiled. Two opponents at a time, this would be interesting. Marina had went for her axe since few adversaries, the shaft of her spear broke inside the thorax of the fifth orc she had killed. It was her first real fight since her companions and her had fought the Lich and its goblins and she was impressed with the relative easiness with which she killed her enemies. In the Guild, she had only trained with Amon and it always seemed to her that her lover was restraining his hits with her, so she did not have, until now, a real awareness of the progress she had made. With a swift movement, she killed her last opponent, beheading him from a hit at the throat. Her enemy vanquished, she looked around her. The orcs seemed to have been almost all decimated. She turned toward Romatzo who fought against two orcs, but he seemed to handle the situation very well. Then she looked at Sigrid. She saw that her sister had just killed her last opponent too. Leaning on her sword, she looked tired and she breathed heavily. Suddenly, a gigantic shadow appeared behind Sigrid. " Sigrid, careful !!!" cried Marina. Sigrid turned and rose her shield in a quick reflex. Luckily for her, it was ringed with metal. Because her assailant was Ermkarn and his magic sword, combined with his exceptional strength, had cut through it almost like in butter. If her shield had only be made of wood, she would have had her arm cut off. Ermkarn grimaced angrily, his attack had failed, but he did not lost time and with a brutal movement which destabilised Sigrid, he released his sword from the shield. Then, he took advantage of the moment where she staggered to give her a violent strike of his own shield. The powerful shock sent Sigrid rolled several meters away. The shield's blow had hit her head and made her lost consciousness instantly. Ermkarn quickly covered the few meters separating him from Sigrid who was lying on the ground, unconscious. He was ready to give her the death blow. When Ermkarn appeared behind Sigrid, Marina tried to rush to help her sister, but a last orc, that she had not spotted, jumped next to her and struck with precision. Distracted by the attack on her sister, the blow should have hit her and killed her instantly. But it was without expecting her reflexes beyond the norm and she avoided the blade who passed at less that one millimeter of her face. Gathering, she counter-attacked right away. But despite the rapidity with which she killed her enemies, Marina doubted that she could eliminated this one on time to go save her sister. ____________________________________________ New storyline !!! Oh boy this one took so long to make. The picture itself has been relatively quick to create, but the text, who I thought would be easy to write like the two previous, took me so long. A mixture of been busy, a certain lack of inspiration and procrastination, have made this so long and tedious to write. And it would have taken even longer if I hadn't decided to cut a good part of the text. Cut part that will be used in the next scene. About Marina's (and Romatzo's) enhanced way to move and strike, there was an earlier scene that I had decided to skip, where Marina and Sigrid were training together and where Marina's superior abilities were hinted. Now I regret a little to have skipped it. For those who aren't familiar with the first storyline, I hope it doesn't feel like it is coming from nowhere. If you wonder why Ermkarn was not the first in the battle, well, he is the "end boss", so I had to keep him, well, for the end. :D
