Description

Here's another of the Spiderhunters, the Orange-tufted. It is distinctive in that the male has orange arm (wing) pits (females are a fainter orange). The Orange-tufted spiderhunter is endemic to the Philippines. It is a is a restricted-range species in that it is confined to the Mindanao and the Eastern Visayas and is mostly found in the under-storey of forests, forest edges, second growths and cultivated areas (especially banana farms). It feeds on nectar, insects, and of course, spiders. It is not threatened and, at least for now, its population of 267,000 individuals appears to be stable.
