Very detailed photo of this chrysalis, Barb. Out of that little green package comes one of the most beautiful creatures on the planet!

Forgive me for being so late, Barb, it was one of those weeks, but I saw this go up and loved that you posted a chrysalis in the middle of a year of weather devastations and floods and wildfires (and their pollutions---did Mass turn orange like other places?): It's a sign of renewal. It's amazing to me how chrysalis's just stay up there, attached by a mere little "twig"...and I saw the following shots (from your neighbor) with the butterfly coming loose. Always an amazing sight. The word "chrysalis" comes from a root meaning "gold," which I always thought was sweet since those little hard birth chambers seem to give up gold when they open (w/ the crystalline opulent beauty of butterflies). I hope all is well with you and your loved ones (your mom included, of course) and that you're all weathering this summer as well as you can. People who deny climate-change at this point are living in an alternate universe. In any case, these photos are a sweet reminder that there's still a lot right in the world. Take care, and I wish you a radiant golden august.

(My Augusts in Mass were amazing...((this is gonna be a memory, so you may have to sit a bit...my memories ain't short!)) I'm used to blistering heat and humidity in august, with no wind---the air sits around here like a drenched blanket. But when I had my first august in Massachusetts, whoosh, I was amazed at how temperate it was, and how lush. That was the month I took my first trips through the state---and saw mills! Mills!!! Old red brick, sooty ruddy mills, some abandoned, some still in use...they were a scene right out of Charles Dickens' old London. And in Worcester---which they called "Wooostah," another culture shock for a twangy midwesterner---the hilly streets, and 19th C rusticated stone bldgs, and old victorian mansions were everywhere. Our apartment was the 1st floor of one of those mansions, and it had those great "teardrop" wood detailings all over the place: Those victorian wood homes were a carnival, a huge casserole of architectural ornament and carving...I loved it. It was also the first time I heard "pahhhk" (for "park") and "pahhhk the cahhh" and so on. (I was from Chi-kwawww-go. We talked different...) We lived on a puerto rican street and they had street fairs every night, we ate like dinosaurs, danced to great latin beats, and listened to the car horns playing "La Cucaracha" at 3 in the morning. Best damned car horns I've ever heard. Western Mass was a whole other world: like the Forest Primeval...and we found mausoleums in there, and gravestones, tiny off-roads. (The vermont 'highways' were one lane, either way; and some guy in a pickup truck drove at 20 miles an hour---he had his chickens in the back, and they didn't like speed---and you couldn't pass for hours because it was all curves...grrrrrrrrrrr...) Plus "Friendly's," lol. We don't have them in these here parts. They were everywhere in Mass. Anyway, I luuuuved that state...and I hope your August is wonderful, and cool!)

Thanks Mark! I loved your memories. Western MA is different from the Boston area, for sure. Sadly, Friendly's has closed most of their restaurants. You have a good August, too.
