Description

A forging Painted Bunting appears unaware of the danger its in as a Goliath Bird-eater Tarantula approaches. The Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris) summers in the United States from southern Missouri, Kansas and North Carolina to the Gulf Coast. It is ocassionally seen in Arizona. It winters in Florida, the Carribean, Mexico and Central America. It eats grass seeds and insects. They usually forage on the ground, but during the breeding season the foraging habitat is much more diverse. In addition to ground foraging, birds regularly forage in marshes, forest edges and in trees (up to 10 m). They generally hop on the ground, but may walk in performing some displays. Adult males and females differ significantly in plumage. In male adult plumage, the head and nape are blue, the upper back is a lime-green, the lower back, rump and underparts (chin through vent) red to orange-yellow, contrasting with darker gray-brown wings and tail with tinges of green and orange. On the adult female, the upper parts are dark greenish and the under parts are yellow green. While the Goliath Bird-eater does occasionally live up to its name, but this tarantula only rarely preys on birds. Mostly, its diet consists primarily of other large arthropods, worms, and amphibians. In the wild, it has been observed feeding on rodents, frogs, toads, lizards, and even snakes. They do not consume their prey in the open; rather, they drag it back to their burrow and begin the digesting process. They do this by liquifying the insides of their prey and proceed to suck it dry. It is the largest spider in the world by mass (175 g (6.2 oz)) and body length (up to 13 cm (5.1 in)), and second to the Giant Huntsman spider by leg span. A full grown Goliath Bird-eater can have a leg span up to 30 cm (12 in). In response to threats, Goliath bird-eaters stridulate by rubbing setae on their pedipalps and legs. Also, when threatened they rub their abdomen with their hind legs and release hairs that are a severe irritant to the skin and mucous membranes. These urticating hairs can be harmful to humans. These hairs can getting into ones’ eyes or on the skin and create painful irritation and inflammation. Like all other tarantulas, they have fangs large enough (2–4 cm or 0.79–1.57 in) to break the skin of a human. They carry venom in their fangs and have been known to bite when threatened, but the venom is relatively harmless and its effects are comparable to those of a wasp's sting. Tarantulas generally bite humans only in self-defense, and these bites do not always result in envenomation (known as a "dry bite”). The Goliath bird-eater is an edible spider. The spider is part of the local cuisine in northeastern South America, prepared by singeing off the urticating hairs and roasting it in banana leaves. The flavor has been described as "shrimp-like".
