Description
Sean went to Kat’s house after work. She worked from home so she wasn’t wearing her human glamour when she answered the door. They had met and become friends online. It wasn’t until later that he’d learned she was Unseelie, a sworn enemy of Oberon and all Seelie. He was still adjusting to being friends with her and preferred when she used her glamour, but didn’t request it.
“What’s going on?” She asked.
“A dragon and an immortal came from another world and offered to take me there. They said there were elves there and some were from our court before the split. The immortal had made the offer long ago to Oberon and Tatiana but they didn’t want to force the people to leave their homes. Only a few dozen left.”
“Tatiana mentioned that once. We were alone. I was never to tell anyone. But could this be the same person?”
“He said his name was Trimish. And he knew things even the army doesn’t. Like Oberon calling children simple and Tatiana saying they weren’t, and Tatiana’s miscarriage.”
“No one’s supposed to know about that.”
“I know. I only know because I’m his champion. He told me Trimish brought someone to try to help her and save the baby, someone who knew healing magic greater than our own. I’m never to repeat that.”
“You think that’s the same man?”
“When they first approached, I thought they wanted me to try to heal someone. They said they knew someone who can do that as if they were talking about someone who can do more than doctors.”
“Do you trust them?”
“I don’t know. I said I wouldn’t go with them until I knew what happened to our people. On the way here, I prayed and Shandalar said I made the right choice but didn’t say if they were trouble or not.”
Kat nodded. “Like you, I’d like to find our people first.” She paused. “It’s too bad they left. If we find our people, maybe an old friend might help our rulers remember what they once meant to each other.”
Sean raised an eyebrow.
“I look at the humans and what they’ve become, their wars and all. I see we were headed in the same direction. I don’t know if the two courts can ever be joined, but maybe we can have a truce.”
“That sounds close to treason for an Unseelie.”
Kat sometimes sounded less like any Unseelie he’d ever met.
“I know. If you ever repeat it to anyone…”
“I won’t. We’re friends. I don’t betray friends. And maybe if our people return, we can invite that old friend to help us. He left me a way to contact him,” Sean offered
Kat grinned and Sean realized that in plotting to manipulate their rulers, he was sounding a bit more Unseelie too.
