Description

I love Bill Wither's "Grandma's Hands." After beating us in a game of SORRY! I asked if I could take some photos of my Grandpa's hand. It is new years eve 2023 and we were getting ready to eat. I didn't have enough time to set up the tripod and lower the ISO. Please excuse the grain. The last time I took a photograph for artistic purposes I developed it myself in the dark room at an art school. Critiques were brutal. The professor didn't appreciate my fondness for imperfections. Now those "imperfections" are sought after effects. I tried to tell them. RAW | cheap old DSLR | Developed in Affinity Photo. Thanks Grandpa.

The strength of photography is that it immortalizes a moment in time. It now lives on forever.

So true. Too bad I couldn't upload the 134 MB PNG. I got to show him high quality jpegs on a 65" TV. I have black and white film I developed of my other Grandpa as he was dying many years ago. Those are very intimate and hit hard. They are just for me.

These are absolutely magnificent! I didn't really see any grain, but considering this wonderful subject, it wouldn't have bothered me a bit. These photos tell a wonderful story of a long life of hard work, and lots of love. Beautiful.

OMG... Do I remember those days of stripping 35mm film out of the little cartridges, and winding it onto a reel in the absolute dark. Then fiddling with those funny smelling solutions, and looking at those glorious negatives when done. I had a complete setup in the basement of our first house, a Jobo processor, a massive enlarger capable of 4 X 5 sheet film, 35mm, and everything in between. Lots of good times to remember. I have to admit I like digital much better now that I'm an old fart.. LOL

If those hands could talk the stories they'd tell. Thanks for the comment RodS. I have a B&W roll in an analogue camera I took of my last trip to DC before I got sick over a decade ago I'd like to develop. I thought about setting up one of the large tents I used to use for growing... tomatoes & converting it into a darkroom but the chemicals and the hardware just for 1 roll? At least it would have industrial grade ventilation :) Wouldn't have to buy that. It's so rewarding watching an image slowly appear on that slimy paper. Perhaps one day. Wow, 4x5 sheets. I never went that big in photography but it would be nice to be in an art gallery again. It's been a while since I've had my work removed from an installation because of people's delicate sensibilities. I think OG photography will make a comeback and probably sell fairly well if it isn't already.
