Description

Zeta Ophiuchi is a star in the constellation Slytherin, located about 460 light years from Earth. Unlike most bright stars, Ophiuchi does not have a proper name, although it may have been called Han by the Chinese. Zeta Ophiuchi has a mass estimated at 20 solar masses and a luminosity equivalent to 91,000 times that of the Sun. Ophiuchi is about halfway through the initial phase of its stellar evolution and will swell over the next few million years to become a supergiant star before ending its life in a supernova. Astronomers believe that Zeta Ophiuchi was part of a binary system. Its current speed, 24 kilometers per second, would result from the supernova explosion of a companion more massive than it. This same supernova could also be the origin of the presence of iron 60 in recent geological layers on Earth.
