Description
~Carmen Sandiego~
My girlfriend gave me the "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" CD-ROM game as a present back in 1991, and I had plenty of fun playing it. The game turned into multiple TV shows with several seasons, comics series, books, novels, a board game, then an animated TV show, multiple other video games, but then went silent for 15 years, until Netflix brought it back with a new animated TV show that spun from 2019 through 2021. The game has sold over 5 million copies worldwide, and the 1990s TV shows were nominated to Emmy Awards 45 times (winning 8), being watched by over 10 million viewers a week for its educational value.
In the original game, Carmen was a famous criminal. She was a thief, and your role in the game was to chase her across the world by following clues, and finally arrest her (or other criminals from the V.I.L.L.E. organization) in the end, but only if you gathered the right clues. It was possible to come to the wrong conclusion, and either arrest the wrong person, or to simply miss crucial evidence and let the criminal escape.
In the modern Netflix series, they changed Carmen, trying to make her a hero instead of a villain. Also, Carmen was an adult in the game, while in this version, she was much younger. Due to these discrepancies, I am not sure if we can reconcile the original with this "re-imagined" version of the character, but I liked the show nonetheless. In spite of the hefty dose of woke feminism, the writing was competent and entertaining.
I still have the original CD-ROM, and surprise, surprise: it still runs under a DOS prompt in Windows 10! I was curious if it would still be fun playing nowadays, and it was! It has aged well, and I have lost hours playing it again. The game challenges your grasp in geography, which is where the educational value lies.

Nice, but in the book side and behind greenery becomes meaningful, ofcourse, not suitable to eyes that don't see the Sun..

Thanks! Yeah, the book side and behind greenery need to be well guarded. 😁
