Description

Here's the third of my eight new species of butterflies, Rippon's Birdwing. It found throughout the Australasia and Indomalayan regions, primarily the Indonesian Islands of the Moluccas and Sulawesi. It is a big butterfly (as most birdwings are). The wingspan of this species ranges from 7–7.8 inches (18–20 cm). Although males are mostly black in color, gray colors and golden spots may be seen on the hindwings. Female adult butterflies are larger in size and are mostly dark brown in color. It's Latin name, Troides hypolitus, reflects the name Hippolytus, who was the son of Theseus in a unhappy tale from Greek mythology.

Thank you Ken for your wild life images. So many insects, birds, butterflies and other wild species are vanishing!
