Description
Last of four portraits of 'The Reading Group' from The Finny Stories.
Lucas is 'getting used' to things. Firstly, he's getting used to being an orphan, something that has been an ongoing situation for the last week or so. He is getting used to having to defend his plate at mealtimes. He is also getting used to the orphanage-issue clothing, like the strange mixture of footwear... the twice-patched underpants had also raised an eyebrow when he had been handed them.
Outside of orphanage life, Lucas was getting used to being a member of 'The Reading Group' (or The Four Orphans of The Apocalypse as unkind people called them). He had been told that he had taken the place of a boy called 'Worms' who, against all the odds had gotten himself adopted. Being in The Reading Group meant that he was quickly getting used to things like being the lookout for various criminal activities... and he had lately been spending rather more time sloshing through the maze of New Flagstaff's sewers than he expected his mother would have liked. Still, life had certainly gotten a lot more interesting.
