------------------ The Iron Cathedral. "When I go into Berlin, I'll be riding that tank." (M.Sgt. Joe Gunn). Hi all. Just 'working hard' again... how much I missed it!. ... pushing my old PC & soft to the limits. Greetings. - ABOUT THE MOVIE. "Sahara" - 1943 - Columbia Pictures. Screenplay written by John Howard Lawson. Directed by Zoltan Korda. US production, filmed in the Imperial County (CA) portion of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, near the Salton Sea, with support from the IV Armored Corps. Filming commenced in January 1943 and was completed in April. Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Bruce Bennett, Dan Duryea, J. Carrol Naish, Rex Ingram, Richard Aherne, Louis Mercier, Lloyd Bridges, Carl Harbord... *From Wikipedia. - ABOUT THE LEE TANK IN THE MOVIE. The American M3 Medium Tank was produced in two forms, one for US needs called "Lee" and one modified to British requirements called "Grant". Design commenced in July 1940, and the first M3s were operational in late 1941. The M3 was generally appreciated during the North African campaign for its mechanical reliability, good armor protection, and heavy firepower. In all three aspects, the M3 was capable of engaging German tanks and towed anti-tank guns. However, the high silhouette and low, hull-mounted 75 mm were tactical drawbacks. In addition, the use of riveted hull superstructure armor on the early versions led to spalling, where the impact of enemy shells caused the rivets to break off and become projectiles inside the tank. Later models were built with all-welded armor to eliminate this problem. These lessons had already been applied to the design of the M4 Sherman. Of all production, 78.6% went to Lend-Lease. The United States made limited use of the M3, in Africa and Sicily against the Germans and in the 1943 Gilbert Islands campaign against the Japanese. An exception was in the China-Burma-India theatre, where the M3 performed exceptionally well. Lees and Grants of Commonwealth forces were still using the type there to the last day of WWII. *From Wikipedia and wwiiafterwwii. - ABOUT THE IMAGE.
