It didn't take long, within the first hour of her new post, when a series of loud bangs echoed through the facility, followed by blaring emergency sirens. The HR manager hurriedly ushered the disoriented young doctor to what looked like a cramped medical dorm, securing the door and locking it from the outside. He told her he would return once the situation improved. That was "eight hours ago". The AC must have stopped. The room had turned sweltering. The main light flickered, then succumbed to darkness, leaving only the auxiliary light from a backup generator. The once alarming wails of the sirens now seemed muted, lost in the persistent drone of the generator. Occasionally, what seemed to be screams or yells, broke the silence. Hot and humid, drenched in sweat, the damn fabric of her dress clung to her skin like syrup on a summer day. She stood there frozen, beyond exhaustion, attempting to process it all."
