Description

~The Catsuit~ Bodysuits have existed forever, but the term "catsuit" has only emerged somewhere between the 1950's and 60s (recent), and it's been a while I have wondered why. Why "cat"? To illustrate the idea, I thought our curvy elf Aresia was perfect for the role, wearing her black leather catsuit. Note how the front zipper is a key element in the outfit. 😁 And then, it just occurred to me that this was the time when Julie Newmar was playing the "Catwoman" in the Adam West "Batman" show, soon becoming a cultural phenomenon in the 1960s. Even though 2 other actresses (Lee Meriwether and Eartha Kitt) have played the "Catwoman" in later parts of that show (due to scheduling conflicts), Julie was the most remembered for the role due to her striking and captivating looks, her distinctive tall and statuesque physique, sharp features, and the iconic mane of red hair she wore in the show (Newmar was a natural blonde). Being a skilled dancer, Newmar has translated that talent when playing the Catwoman with her smooth and graceful cat-like agility, adding a physicality layer to the role. Beyond acting and dancing, Newmar was known for her wit and intelligence. She appeared on talk shows like "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson", showcasing her personality and ability to engage with audiences beyond scripted roles. Let's remember it takes a lot of wit to play the Catwoman, and Newmar was known for having plenty of it. The Adam West "Batman" series itself became a massive pop culture phenomenon in the 1960s. Newmar, as the first Catwoman, became inextricably linked to the show's success. This association further cemented her place in the public eye. I know, Julie is now 91, but she has still voiced the Catwoman in Batman animated shows in 2016 and 2017, and has even voiced Bruce Wayne's mother, Martha Wayne, in 2010. Go Julie! 😎 Therefore, my theory is that Julie Newmar's Catwoman role might have originated the term "catsuit" due to her connection with the Catwoman, and the bodysuit she was wearing in the show. To this date, catsuits are still related to slinking, which was the Catwoman's primary feature. Wikipedia also claims the term's origin to be unknown, but then they link it to a photo of the Catwoman from the Adam West show. It's hard not to see the connection! ^^ Of course, I can't say for sure if that's what has originated the term, but if it wasn't, then this would be the world's hugest coincidence! 😄 3D pose and camera set in Poser, character LoRA trained in KohyaSS, rendered in Stable Diffusion, postwork in PaintShop.

Oh, God, those were the days! I used to actually watch TV back then. I never - or rarely - missed Johnny Carson on TTS. And that Batman series was just - unimitateable (I just made up a word...LOL)! Julie was fantastic, and I think you've nailed the origin of the "catsuit" term. And Aresia fills that suit out sooooo perfectly! (It looks great on my TNA ladies, too!)

This is excellent!

Thank you! Ironically, Yvonne Craig has quit the Adam West's Batman likely because she didn't have Newmar's cat-like agility, and complained she couldn't move in her purple Batgirl catsuit. The Batgirl character was a success, but Craig just couldn't stand the catsuit, and even asked the producers for a raise for the "torture" of having to wear it. LOL
