Hiding in the shadow. Nice capture. I think if there was no DOF, he would be hard to spot. I've never seen one in real life. I know we have 3 species here, but I've never seen any. Are they very small? 🤍

I haven't gotten too close in order to guarantee a size but they do look fairly small. I think they might be a tad bit smaller than a robin if that gives any idea of the size. They are tricky to spot - you can know their around by the woodpecking noise but sound bounces around quite a bit it can be hard to pinpoint where it is coming from despite the loud hammering. Hopefully you'll get to see one in real life one day! They are quite fun to see.

Wow, they are a lot smaller than I'd imagined. I thought they would be about the size of a Starling. I'm not likely to see one even thought I live in a semi-rural area. Apparently about 99% of people haven't ever seen one over here 🤍
